Founded in 1987 by life partners Doone and Stephen Marshall, Body & Soul was the first day spa in the Berkshires. It has been offering therapeutic massages, facials, and other body-and-soul-satisfying services and products ever since. The Theraspa is peacefully located in a charming vintage house just beyond Great Barrington’s bustling village center.
Stephen, who is originally from Houston, TX, met Doone, an Aussie through and through, at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. Body & Soul has been their life passion since its creation. Their goal is to have every client say: “That was the best massage/facial I ever had.”
A Dr. Hauschka Certified Master Esthetician of 22 years, Doone was trained by Susan Kurz, founder of Dr. Hauschka, USA and author of “Awakening Beauty.” In addition to providing exclusive Dr. Hauschka facial treatments to her loyal customers, she regularly hosts events and workshops on skin care, life care, and aging wisely.
Doone’s current focus is on creating a program to help women age well. She is currently writing a book called “Sexy at Sixty” which draws upon her work and life experience of embracing and encouraging authentic and beautiful aging. “I am passionate about women doing what we can to look and feel beautiful, valued and valuable, as we increasingly tap into our own inner beauty. We need to support each other and embrace this passage.”
Stephen began his journey into the healing profession in 1976. He has studied with acclaimed teachers of the Rolfing Technique, Polarity Therapy, Foot Reflexology, Soma Neuromuscular Therapy, and Sports Massage. He graduated from the Soma School of Massage, and later trained in the Bennett Reflexes, Shiatsu, various Oriental Medicine Modalities, and an Advanced Kinesiology Technique known as MetaKinesiology. Stephen learned from some of the world’s finest healers, including Robert Jafe, M.D. In 1986, he formed the Marshall Academy of Healing Arts for Advanced Training and has traveled and taught all over the world.
Stephen was important to the early days of internationally renowned Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, where he served as the first male massage therapist and continues to teach today. Teaching bodywork has always been a natural calling for Stephen, who established the first formally recognized professional massage training program in the state of Pennsylvania.
In The MARSHALL METHOD, he offers a unique and unusual blend of healing skills and insights.
